Dear Running: iPod CPR

Dear Running,

Well Running, we almost had a close call today.  We almost lost one of our very dear friends, My Pink iPod.

As you well know, My Pink iPod has been on every single run with us since the beginning of Becka/Running history.  My Pink iPod has taught just about every single aerobics class with me that has ever been taught.  My Pink iPod has listened to HUNDREDS of audiobooks with me on HUNDREDS of road trips.  My Pink iPod has been dropped countless times, sometimes in water, and has been misplaced around the house, under kids beds, in the car, and even temporarily in the garage.  She is covered in some serious dents and scratches but she ALWAYS bounces back.  Well, almost always.

One upon a time, in very late 2007 I decided that I *might* want to be sort-of friends with you, Running.  But I also decided that I wasn't ready to make a HUGE commitment to you and I also decided that I needed some sort of buffer between us, you know, like taking your friend on a date as back-up.  So I went out and found My Pink iPod.  And she has been with us ever since.  It's not that I don't enjoy spending time with JUST YOU, running, it's just that, well, we've never REALLY been alone together.

Until today.

Today was our 9 miler, Running, and honestly?  It was okay.  Not fast, (I am actually feeling embarrassed about how slow we are right now but I think the best we can hope for right now is "done" rather than "fast") but I think we both felt good about it.  I actually L.O.V.E.D. running in the rain.  The thick, rich smell of grass and leaves and earth in the thick heavy wet air made me stop once or twice and just take a deep breath and savour that clean, rainy scent.  It's one of my favorite smells.

One thing I had forgotten about marathon training is the sheer monotony of it.  Hours and hours and HOURS spent with you, Running.  Putting in the miles one foot in front of the other on endless stretches of mostly empty highway (expect for the roadkill....) is, no offense, kinda boring after a while.  So I loaded up My Pink iPod with some books today.  Along for our run today came THIS little gem:

Now I know this sheer nerdom doesn't come as a shock AT ALL to you, Running.  Some of the things we've listened to with My Pink iPod during our hours together have been WAY more boring than this but it definitely helps to pass the time and I get tired of my music after a while.

Our last half mile today was almost PURELY uphill so I decided we needed a little boost.  I switched from "BOOK" to "MUSIC" and started to motivate myself uphill when My Pink iPod slipped out of the case (the velcro is old) and landed into a BIG puddle of water.  And stopped working.  Period.

Well, we sure booked it home fast, Running!  We had some serious My Pink iPod CPR to perform by way of rice and towels.  When she clicked back on after drying out it almost brought a tear to my eye.  She's alive and kicking and ready to go another round.

We only spent about 5 minutes alone together today, Running, and I must say, I prefer having the buffer.  Hopefully My Pink iPod will be with us for years to come.  It's not you, it's me. :) I guess you and I aren't meant to be monogamous, Running!

Love,

Becka
